More information on each topic
Here you will find more information on each topic such as meeting points, descriptions, further links...
- Come together
In the morning there will be a short welcome meeting with your contact persons and program coordinators. At this meeting you will get to know your German teacher.
Afterwards your teacher will accompany you to your first German lecture.
- German classes
During the Welcome Weeks you will have German lessons in small groups and will experience a fun and interesting German start of campus life at TH Lübeck.
In order to ensure a good planning of the German lessons, please let us know your language level by e-mail to sprachenzentrum(at)th-luebeck.de. If you are unsure, please consult the CEFR global scale here: https://www.coe.int/en/web/common-european-framework-reference-languages/table-1-cefr-3.3-common-reference-levels-global-scale. If you have zero knowledge of German, please let us know as well.
On the last day of the Welcome Weeks, you will receive an individualized recommendation for a semester-long German course if you would like to continue studying German.
- Introductory Lecture 1: Welcome to THL – introduction to student life
What sport activities are offered to THL students? How to use public transport and what are the advantages of the Semesterticket? Where do I get lunch? How do I connect with the student commitees and what is ESN? What do I do in case of medical emergencies, accidents or illnesses?
These and other questions will be answered during this session. We will cover all topics related to being a student at THL.
- Introductory Lecture 2: Welcome to THL – academic aspects
During this session, you will get to know the university related apps (e.g. QIS, Moodle, Webmail...), learn about the organizational structure at THL, how to find lecture and examination schedules, exam registrations and how to access your grades and much more. All this information is essential for your stay at TH Lübeck - do not miss it!
In order to deepen your knowledge, a practical exercise will take place after the lecture. Some senior students are going to supervise and to support you. Please make sure you bring your laptop!
- Guided City Tour (Lübeck) and Billiards
Discover Lübeck in a guided city tour. Together with your fellow students, you will experience Lübeck's famous landmarks, the medieval passages, the waterways around the old town and much more. You will learn many interesting facts and hopefully have a great time together.
We'll meet at the Holstentor. Please wear comfortable shoes and bring a rain coat if necessary. The tour will be accompanied by senior students.
Directly after the tour and a short lunch break, some senior students are going to meet you at the Billard Sport Casino which is rented exclusively for the participants of the Welcome Weeks. Enjoy a fun afternoon! Food and drinks have to be paid by yourself. You aren't allowed to bring your own food and drinks!
- Meeting at the departments
Who's who in the department? Where can you do what? Where do you have to be during the first week of lectures? Where do you receive individual counseling? All these questions and more will be answered during this meeting at your department. You will receive an academic overview of your department and all offices. You will learn more about course participation and how to register for exams. You will receive information on how courses and lectures are organized in our department, where you find the module descriptions or course passwords. Furthermore, we will help you to organize your timetable based on your learning agreement. Of course, there will be time for questions and recommendations. After this meetings, you should be ready to start lectures and coursework!
>>Please bring your Learning Agreement to this meeting.<<
- Workshop 1: Intercultural Awareness
The workshop is designed to enable you to improve your communication skills and intercultural competence, which will be useful for daily life in your new cultural environment as well as at university. The basics of intercultural communication that you will learn in this workshop will also be helpful for your future professional engagement.
The workshop deals with the comparison of different cultures. It shows that there are many similarities, despite different ways of thinking and acting that are culturally determined. The workshop sharpens your senses for this fact with the help of film clips, practical exercises and role-plays. You will learn how to deal more sensitively with critical moments and potential pitfalls.
The workshop allows you to experience intercultural communication “first hand” thanks to the diversity of our participants, who come from different countries around the world!
Coaches: The intercultural training sessions usually last one day and are conducted by qualified internal and external intercultural trainers. Each trainer has many years of professional expertise in this field and has had experience of asserting themselves in a foreign cultural environment in various contexts.
- Workshop 2: Communication at THL
Communication is the basis of our daily life, when working in teams and international networking. The way we communicate differs depending on our family and educational background, peer groups, regional/social circumstances, and national rules and settings.
In this small workshop we will explore and experience how communication works in everyday German university life and which rules and settings influence international communication and teamwork. We reflect on our own cultural standards and compare different communication styles. - Campus Rally
One highlight of the Welcome Weeks is the Campus Rally. In small groups, the participants conquer the campus, face tricky, fun and educational tasks and, in doing so, get to know the campus better. There is an award for the best team, who will be presented during WeWe Celebration.
- WeWe Celebration
We organize WeWe Celebration to celebrate the Welcome Weeks and especially the start of your academic life at THL. After a two-week introductory period, you will be well prepared for the start of lectures. With drinks and cake, you can relax in the afternoon and exchange ideas with your contact persons. The winning team of the campus rally will be announced at this event and will receive a special surprise.
- Trip to Hamburg
Together we go on an excursion to Hamburg with a guided tour and harbor tour.

- Lübeck
A summer bike tour to a hidden village café
In summer, a bike ride is a great way to discover Lübeck's beautiful surroundings. Lübeck's surroundings are very green, there are many lakes, forests and some beautiful, hidden country cafés. Here you can sit together comfortably with a piece of cake and a cup of coffee and treat yourself to some time out. We recommend the Land Café Gartenschätzchen in Lübeck's surrounding countryside. It can be reached by bike in 20 minutes from TH Lübeck and is ideal for combining with a bike ride into the countryside.
Garten Café Landschätzchen, Eichenweg 10, 23568 Lübeck
www.landschaetzchen-gartencafe.deFor a longer bike ride (about 60 minutes from TH Lübeck), the Eiscafe Bäk on Ratzeburger See is a good choice.

There are three universities in Lübeck. This enriches Lübeck enormously and provides many cultural offerings in the city. The University of Music (Musikhochschule) regularly offers free concerts as part of its students' rehearsals. Here you can enjoy a free concert by first-class musicians. Ideal even in bad weather. The offer is announced on the University of Music website.

Enjoy the sunset at the harbor
You can enjoy a beautiful view of the harbor from the terrace of the Hansemuseum. You can experience the most beautiful sunset in Lübeck from the viewing platform. And the best thing is: the view won't cost you a euro, as a visit to the terrace is free of charge.

Sport and recreation at the Falkenwiese sports center
At the Falkenwiese outdoor sports center, you get a lot of sport in one place. Whether it's soccer, running, inline skating or basketball, there's something for everyone here! You can use the sports field free of charge. There is also a beautiful lawn around the sports field, so pack a picnic and grab your friends.

A cheap harbor cruise on the Elbe for insiders
A harbor tour is definitely part of a visit to Hamburg. However, they are not cheap. What many out-of-towners don't know: There is an inexpensive alternative. You can get a harbor tour for free if you use the regular harbor ferries with your normal public transport ticket. In Hamburg, public transport includes not only buses and trains, but also a number of ferries.
The ferries start at the Landungsbrücken in Hamburg: Line 61 and Line 62 of the HADAG ferry service.

Would you like to find out more about the history of Hamburg? For example, about the time when spices were traded in the port of Hamburg? Then we recommend a city tour with a guide. You can join a tour with the external provider Freetours and decide for yourself how much you pay for the tour, as the tour guide offers his tour on a tip basis.
Registrations for a tour are made via the external provider “Freetour” (TH Lübeck is not in contact with this provider)
https://www.freetour.com/hamburgThe world in miniature-A visit to Miniaturwunderland
Admittedly, Miniaturwunderland is no longer an insider tip in Hamburg. And although it can get quite crowded due to the large number of visitors, we definitely recommend a visit. The staff at Miniaturwunderland have lovingly recreated cities and places from all over the world. From Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria to the rocket launch at Cape Canaveral, there is plenty to discover here. If you look closely, you will discover many interesting and amusing details. We definitely recommend buying tickets online, as there can be long waiting times on site. There is a discount for students.

Hamburg's new concert hall, affectionately known to locals as the “Elphi”, has become a real tourist favorite. Because from the Elbphilharmonie, you have a spectacular view over the port of Hamburg and get an impression of the impressive architecture of the concert hall. Speaking of which: if you are interested in architecture, we definitely recommend a guided tour of the Elbphilharmonie: when there are no rehearsals taking place, take a look at the heart of the Elphi - the large concert hall and its ingenious concept for an optimal sound experience for visitors.
Elbphilharmonie,Platz der Deutschen Einheit, 20457 Hamburg
