Mechanical Engineering, M.Sc.
Our degree program intends to prepare you in the best possible way to achieve your personal objectives - this includes our profile/specialization options. The tight cooperation between our university and the industry forms the background of our expertise, constant development of new ideas and thus of the completion of various Master’s thesis topics.
In our Master degree program you can choose between the specialization/profile „Design and Systems Engineering“ and „Materials Science and Engineering“.
Each profile allows you a high flexibility and individual focus on the selection of subjects. Next to our compulsory modules in each profile, you can choose three more classes individually from the elective catalogues (2 out of elective catalogues 1; one out of elective catalogues 2).
Design and Systems Engineering
The profile “Design and Systems Engineering” focuses on the development and design of products and solutions using the latest technologies and methods in Mechanical Engineering (e.g. model-driven design, digital twin, intelligent systems). These key competences are the foundation to a successful positioning of Mechanical Engineering businesses in the international, globalized markets.
In this specialization, you train and broaden your mindset with the aim to implement a philosophy of thinking above horizons and limitations while targeting innovative application technology that meets all relevant requirements – technical, social and environmental.
The profile teaches you how to face challenges of international markets with new techniques and methods proactively. As a result, it enables you to create innovative design solutions and actively shape the future of Mechanical Engineering.
In addition to our compulsory modules „Simulation and Control“ and „Computer-Aided Techniques in Design“ you can select between modules like „Selected Topics in Mechatronics“, „Toolbox for Fluid Mechanical Design“ or „Prototyping and Virtual Reality“. You find the complete list of electives in the section “course of study”.
Materials Science and Engineering
The profile „Materials Science and Engineering“ focuses on contemporary engineering materials, with emphasis on polymers, composite materials and metals. Materials have always played a major role in the development of new products and will be a key factor to a successful orientation of mechanical engineering in the future. In the past decades, there has been a permanent and progressive growth in the area of plastics, composite materials and high strength alloys.
Those specialized engineering materials increasingly support innovations for lightweight construction, high performance application and generative energy products. Manufacturing processes are optimized and innovative solutions are created that would have been impossible in the past.
In this specialization, you train and broaden your in-depth-knowledge about the microstructure and mechanical behavior of different materials. This profile teaches you how to develop innovative material solutions. As a result, it enables you to create innovative materials for the challenges of the globalized industry and actively shape the future of Mechanical Engineering.
In addition to our compulsory modules „Advanced Material Testing“ and „Polymer Science“ you can select between modules like „Composite Materials“, „Surface Engineering and Tribology“ or „Medical Technology“. You find the complete list of electives in the section “course of study”.
Speciality „International Design Engineer“ (IDE)
You can decide to study one or two semesters abroad at our partner universities in Sweden or Poland during your course of master studies and experience the following benefits: Personality development, expanded professional expertise and building a network of international contacts.
This special option is called “International Design Engineer (IDE)”. This part of the study program is coordinated with our international partner universities, e.g. concerning its curriculum. It provides you with the choice of special subjects and classes at our partner universities in the second or third semester. Hereby we are able to offer you an extended range of classes, subjects and know-how; significantly more than one single university would be able to provide. This way you will gain international experiences and a broader understanding of your field of specialization. In addition, we offer a wide range of partner universities in Europe, too.
Our program also offers you to write your Master’s project and thesis (3rd semester) abroad or in an international student team in a country outside of Germany.
